Why do you like to eat? Most times, it’s not the food itself you enjoy. It’s the aroma that fills the room, the taste that tickles your tastebuds, or the coolness of your favorite iced drink that refreshes your soul. The happiness comes from the comfort it gives or the people it brings together (i.e brunch with friends). Ofc you’re excited to eat some good food, but it's also exciting to get dressed up, go out on a nice day, and enjoy mimosas with friends. Those are the pleasures the simple act of eating can create.
They Say This is The Key to Happiness. Is it?
When I first dealt with recurring feelings of sadness and disconnection, I went to the internet to find ways to help myself feel better. Many, if not all, sources I came across had one topic in common - gratitude.
There are countless videos and articles of people talking about the effects practicing gratitude had on their lives. I often hear others address their gratitude for their home, food and loved ones, which makes sense because those things have a major effect on quality of life and are most highlighted in our society. What about the small, almost minuscule moments of life we sometimes don’t give a second thought to?
Sometimes those are the most important and they are the building blocks for a great day, month or year. Let’s look at 2020 for example, most of us can agree the year sucked overall, but if you look at the year in small moments of how it felt when you did get to go outside or being able to work in your pj’s or even the things you learned about yourself and what you want for your life, it can change your perspective of the year.
The ONE Thing
Savor. Writing down what we are grateful for is a great daily practice that works for some, but not all. Often gratitude is most prominent in the 5 or so mins we dedicate to it in our morning/night routine, during Thanksgiving, or when something (good or bad) happens and we put things into perspective. For those of us that need a little more, try savoring the little things. It intensifies and prolongs the positive emotions that come with good moments or doing something you love.
sa·vor
the act of stepping outside of an experience to review and appreciate it.
How
Share good experiences with people you trust. Don't just write things down in a journal and keep it to yourself. The ones the genuinely care about you want to hear about this experiences and are happy for you. You can even pray and ask for guidance on who to share what information with.
Take polaroids/keep souvenirs - tangible mementos you can look back at later and scrapbook
Move slower - take a beat and breathe. If you need to go as far as creating reminders throughout the day to remind you to stop and appreciate.
Remember to stay present - use things like scent or counting down from 5 to anchor you in the moment.
Just look - don't talk, don't think. Look around and observe
Describe the vibe - what's happening around you, who are you with, how do you feel?
Add music. It brings life to a moment!
Plan for fun. Create itineraries, mood boards etc. It can build excitement for any upcoming activities or trips you want to take.
