6 ways to better hair and a better relationship with your hair
1. PROFESSIONALS FIRST, & Everybody 2nd
Not everyone has the knowledge to be giving you advice on your hair.
Social media provides a platform for anyone to give their opinion whether or not they are educated on a topic. Before you start mixing ingredients in a blender for a hair mask or run to the store to buy a hair product your favorite influencer recommended, seek out creators whose profession provides them with knowledge about hair. They have more accurate and up-to-date knowledge about the beauty industry and they will show you what to avoid and how to properly use products.
Further, when you are looking for advice or more information, find out if it is coming from a source that is knowledgeable about YOUR hair type. Each hair type needs different care.
2. FIND YOUR RIGHT HAND, YOUR GO TO
That hairstyle that you can always fall back on when your hair wants to be funny. It's best for it to be a style that's simple to do and (almost) always comes out looking good. So have fun and explore various hairstyles until you find one you find yourself always going back to.
What is your go to style?
3. Always Psych Yourself In
Why wouldn’t you be consistent with your hair routine if it was as enjoyable and as simple as it could be?
Ask yourself, “Do I NEED to do all these steps?” “Do I like my hair and everything that comes with it?” “If not, what needs to change?"
Create a routine that makes maintain your hair so enjoyable and simple that even on "bad" days you'll remain consistent.
Try using is less products or break up your routine. For example, detangle on a day other than your wash day if detangling takes a lot of time. I would even recommend at least one day before you wash opposed to the night before.
Remember, we want doing our hair to be mentally pleasurable and detangling the night before the day you choose to wash your hair might not be something you’d look forward to. Anyway, sit down, play your favorite show and tackle the tangles, then when wash day comes, detangling is one less thing you have to do 😌
4. Understand that Smaller is Better
Smaller sections, smaller sections, smaller sections. Even if you think you use small sections now, go smaller. The thicker the hair, the smaller the section to care. I find that when I do my hair in small (and I mean SMALL) sections, I finish my hair faster and it ultimately looks better.
5. Make Being Consistent EASY
Remember when I asked "why wouldn’t you be consistent with your hair routine if it was as simple af?" just a few lines ago? Repetition signifies importance. Keep things EASY by creating a routine that makes maintaining your hair so enjoyable and simple that even on tough/lazy days you'll remain consistent.
I have a post on "how to always look put together" coming soon. It will help you build your ideal schedule and keep you consistent with taking care of yourself.
6. Have Confidence That is NOT Rooted in Your Hair
Making sure that your hair doesn't negatively impact your identity is crucial for your self-esteem. Yes, it's part of you, but it doesn't completely define you. You are not less worthy if your hair isn't a certain length or texture.
The goal is to be able to go out and still feel confident and beautiful even if you are having a "bad hair" day. Hair is meant to add to your already strong self-image. If something such as hair loss were to occur, you can overcome it and stand firm even without your hair.
